Coffee made simple

If you're like me you love coffee. It's a classic pick-me up in the morning or in the afternoon. For centuries people around the world have enjoyed this amazing brewed drink. For years I have been drinking the same cup of coffee each morning and then going about my day. With the popularity of coffee I decided to start experimenting with recipes to see if I could duplicate the styles found in retail coffee shops. Now, listen closely to what I am about to say: you must grind your own beans. While many coffee companies would have you believe that pre-ground, vacuum sealed cans are the best I beg to differ. You just can't get the freshest cup without fresh beans, peroid. I understand brand loyalty plays a hude factor in peoples' choices but it's narrowminded to not try something new once in a while.

In the last 20 years there has been a huge revolution in the coffee industry. You'd be remiss if you said you didn't see a Starbucks® on every corner. The choices available in the big chain shops are often sugar-laden "milkshakes" with a bit of coffee added. I prefer the old classic - black, no sugar. I am often asked how I can drink such a flavorless bitter cup. The fact is that coffee is loaded with flavor. It doesn't take long to appreciate the carefully selected beans and their inherent flavors that shine when brewed properly. Take the time to brew properly and you can become a straight coffee drinker. Plus you'll save money and enjoy less added sugar to your diet!

The recipe I am about to give you if simple to make and easy to do daily. All it takes is an accurate food scale and a good coffee maker.

  • Fresh coffee beans - I prefer whole bean - french roast
  • water
  • coffee grinder
  • food scale or other suitable scale
  • coffee maker
I only make 1/2 a pot sized brews each morning. This serves my needs and let's my wife have a large cup too. Let's get started. Get your scale set up and measure out 52 grams of whole beans. Place the beans in your grinder and grind for 9 to 11 seconds. A fine grind results in maximum flavor. Set up the coffee maker with 8 cups of water measured on the side of the coffee pot. Start the pot per the instructions for your coffee maker.
That's it! Pour the hot coffee into your favorite stainless travel mug and take the goodness with you! Enjoy the silky flavors and the uniqueness that is coffee. Experiment with different grind times until you find your favorite. Variations in flavor and boldness can be found by trying slightly less beans or grinding time. Experiemtation is the key to finding coffee success. Another great idea is to buy different bean roasts. French roast is my favorite. Italian roast is similar in that they both provide a bold dark flavor. Other beans and roasts can give you hints of citrus. Different regions of the world grow various beans that can bring you into the fold of serious coffee drinkers. Take a bit of time and enjoy the best morning possible with a cup of your favorite home brewed coffee.
